Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Common questions and answers about Golain's Android Device Management platform.
General Questions
What is Golain?
Golain is a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution that helps organizations manage, secure, and monitor Android devices. It uses Android Management APIs to provide enterprise-grade device management capabilities.
What Android versions are supported?
Golain supports Android 6.0 (API level 23) and higher. For work profiles, Android 5.0 (API level 21) and higher is supported, though Android 6.0+ is recommended for best experience.
Do I need special hardware?
No special hardware is required. Any Android device running a supported Android version can be enrolled. However, some advanced features may require specific device capabilities.
Is internet connection required?
Yes, devices need an active internet connection to communicate with the management server, receive policies, and sync data. Some features may work offline temporarily, but a connection is required for full functionality.
Enrollment Questions
How long does enrollment take?
Enrollment typically takes 2-5 minutes, depending on your internet connection speed and device performance. The process includes downloading policies and installing required applications.
Can I enroll multiple devices?
Yes, you can enroll as many devices as your license allows. Each device goes through the same enrollment process individually.
What happens if enrollment fails?
If enrollment fails, check the troubleshooting guide for common issues. You can retry enrollment at any time. If problems persist, contact your IT administrator or Golain support.
Can I unenroll a device?
Yes, devices can be unenrolled through the management portal. Unenrolling will remove the work profile and all managed data from the device. Personal data remains intact.
Do I need administrator access to enroll?
Yes, you need administrator or enrollment permissions in the Golain portal to generate enrollment links or QR codes. End users can enroll their own devices using provided enrollment links.
Work Profile Questions
What is a work profile?
A work profile is a separate, secure space on Android devices that keeps work apps and data separate from personal apps and data. It's part of Android Enterprise and provides better security and management capabilities.
Can I use personal apps with a work profile?
Yes, personal apps remain accessible alongside work apps. Work apps are marked with a briefcase icon to distinguish them from personal apps.
What happens to my personal data?
Your personal data remains completely private and separate from work data. IT administrators can only see and manage data within the work profile, not your personal apps or data.
Can I pause work apps?
Yes, you can pause work apps to stop receiving notifications from work applications when you're done for the day. This feature helps maintain work-life balance.
What happens if I delete the work profile?
Deleting the work profile removes all work apps and data from your device. Your personal apps and data remain unaffected. You may need to re-enroll if you want to restore work access.
Policy Questions
What are policies?
Policies are sets of rules and configurations that control how devices behave in your organization. They can enforce security requirements, restrict features, configure applications, and more.
How are policies applied?
Policies are automatically applied to enrolled devices. When you assign a policy to a device or device group, it syncs within a few minutes. You can also manually trigger a sync.
Can I have multiple policies?
Yes, you can assign multiple policies to devices. When policies conflict, device-specific policies take precedence over group policies, and more restrictive settings override less restrictive ones.
Can users change policy settings?
No, policy settings are managed by administrators and cannot be changed by end users. This ensures consistent security and management across all devices.
What happens if a device doesn't comply with policies?
Non-compliant devices are flagged in the management portal. Administrators can take action such as sending notifications, locking the device, or removing access until compliance is restored.
Security Questions
Is my data secure?
Yes, Golain uses industry-standard security practices including encryption, secure authentication, and compliance with Android Management API security requirements.
What data can administrators see?
Administrators can only see data within the work profile, including work apps, work data, and device management information. Personal apps and data remain private.
Are devices tracked?
Location tracking is optional and must be enabled through policies. If enabled, administrators can see device location for security and management purposes.
Can administrators access my personal files?
No, administrators cannot access personal files, photos, messages, or any data outside the work profile. Only work profile data is visible and manageable.
Application Questions
Can I install any app?
App installation depends on your organization's policies. Some organizations allow any app from the Play Store, while others restrict to approved apps only.
What happens to apps when I unenroll?
When you unenroll, all work profile apps are removed from your device. Personal apps remain unaffected.
Can I use apps that require root access?
No, work profiles do not support root access for security reasons. Apps requiring root access cannot be used in the work profile.
How do app updates work?
App updates can be configured to happen automatically or require approval, depending on your organization's policies. Updates are typically managed through Google Play Store.
Troubleshooting Questions
My device shows as offline, what should I do?
Check your internet connection, ensure the device isn't in airplane mode, and verify Google Play Services is up to date. Try restarting the device or manually syncing from the portal.
Policies aren't applying, what's wrong?
Ensure the device is online, check policy assignment, and wait a few minutes for sync. You can manually trigger a sync from the management portal.
I can't install an app, why?
Check if app installation is restricted by policy, verify device storage space, ensure the app is compatible with your Android version, and check if the app is available in your region.
Enrollment link expired, what do I do?
Generate a new enrollment link from the management portal. Enrollment links are time-limited for security purposes.
